KSA Calls For Licensed Bookmakers To Stop Cashback Offers

The Netherlands' regulator of gaming services, De Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), reportedly sent a letter to licensed online sportsbook operators and requested that they discontinue providing cashback offers. A reminder was given by the regulator to its licensees that such offerings are prohibited in the jurisdiction. The memo underlined that bonuses are subject to advertising regulations, something untrue for this specific type.

More specifically, in the letter, it was said that De Kansspelautoriteit had recently received signals that there are online license holders who try to provide players with their loyalty in the form of a cashback. Such a bonus is a type of incentive that encourages excessive involvement, which is not permitted.

The memo also suggested that cashback bonuses have a motivating effect on games. Giving a player a bonus that partially compensates for his loss encourages them to play more. Additionally, among players who are vulnerable, this may lessen their perception of the risk associated with betting.

The licensing authority informed operators that they had until December 5 to officially confirm that they had ceased offering cashback bonuses.
