The gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Denmark's gambling industry has shot up by DKK 1.05 billion ($157 million) in January - February 2022, a 16% increase compared to the same period in 2021. Whereas the sports betting revenue has declined by 3.7%, land casinos and gaming machines rebounded strongly, leading to a positive overall revenue.
How Were the Revenues of Denmark's Casinos and Bookmakers Affected?
According to figures from the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden), sports betting accounted for DKK 412 million ($62.3 million) in the two months. DKK 228 million was generated in January, while February saw a betting revenue of DKK 184 million. For the same months in 2021, the figures were DKK 207 million (a 10.7% decrease) and DKK 221 million in February (a 17% increase).
The revenue for online casinos has also undergone a tiny decrease of 0.2% from DKK 476m ($70.6m) in January-February 2021 to DKK 475 million ($70.5m) in January-February 2022. However, gaming machines like slots in land-based casinos have skyrocketed by over 40.000%, having revenue of DKK 131m ($19.4m), DKK 22m to DKK 109m for each respective month. Taking into consideration that land casinos were closed in that timeframe in 2021 due to restrictions is a good explanation for that massive increase. Most pundits expect the Danish betting market to continue to grow despite the harsh regulations, as the signs from early 2022 are more than optimistic.
